WHAT'S HAPPENING AT THE OPEN LINE?

ASSISTANCE FOR FIRE VICTIMS-- Recent newspaper articles have spotlighted the services that The Open Line is able to provide in a time of crisis. One such crisis occurred on Monday, October 1, when a fire at the Riveria restaurant and the second floor apartments left several people displaced. The counselors at The Open Line are available to work with those affected by the fire by providing for their immediate needs as well as support for the long-term re-building process. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the efforts financially including Tri County Area Federal Credit Union, Quakertown National Bank, the employees of Blommer Chocolate Co., and several individuals in our community. It is wonderful to see the way our community pulls together and supports one another.

EVENTS AT THE OPEN LINE -- As we approach the holiday season, we are entering into our busiest time of the year. In SEPTEMBER, we had children's carnival games, horse and wagon rides and a train display at Community Day. And at Family Fest, we had an informational table and interactive activities. Our 29th annual CROP Hunger Walk on September 30th was a huge success with 191 walkers who raised more than $5,000! (See "CROP Walk" link below for more details.) In OCTOBER, we have many projects happening for domestic violence awareness month. Have you seen our banner hanging across Main Street in Pennsburg? We also co-sponsored a Volunteer Fair with the Senior Center in October. And in NOVEMBER, we have our annual Penny Auction (November 2nd).

And of course we are preparing for our holiday programs. In addition to the traditional Adopt-A-Family program, we are offering a year 'round Adopt-A-Family component for those wishing to help "their" family with school supplies, a Thanksgiving meal, etc.

Many new volunteer opportunities are now listed, as is a new list of items most needed by Open Line. Please take a look and see how you can help. Thank you.

BORN LEARNING INITIATIVE -- Children are born learning. Their early experiences help shape their growth and development.

The Open Line is proud to participate in Born Learning, an initiative that encourages the promotion of early education for children.

"A parent is a child's first and most influential teacher," says Wendy David, Executive Director of the United Way of Western Montgomery County. "Born Learning provides tangible tools that can be used by all parents, grandparents, and caregivers to get children off to the right start and ready for kindergarten."

Whenever a parent comes to The Open Line for services, we allow their children to select a new book to keep. We also provide Born Learning tips and other parenting information.

For details about the program, go to bornlearning.org or United Way of Montgomery County.

For information on how to donate new books to the Born Learning program, contact Doris Sites at 215-679-4112.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE UPDATES --

The Upper Perkiomen Domestic Violence Task Force has been busier than ever!

Recent activities include:

  • Horse and carriage rides and T-shirt painting at Community Day.
  • An awareness banner hanging above Main Street in Pennsburg in October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
  • Yellow Dress (a dating violence awareness presentation) at Upper Perkiomen High School.
  • Purple Ribbon Scholarship awarded.

Break the silence about Domestic Violence

-whether you are a victim or a witness to any form of violence, talk to someone.

-Violence against women and children is not a women's issue . . . It is everyone's issue.

-We must remember that silence is affirming, when we choose not to speak out, we are supporting the behavior.
